I think that's the biggest reason for the drop off in
the use of titles by children. It actually worries me
a little bit, as there are definitely times when I believe one
ought to use more formal address (and one should never presume
to use a first name without being invited to do so), and I
wonder whether kids will default to informal address when it's
inappropriate because they have so little experience with
anything else. That's not to say that I think that all kids
must call all adults Mr/Ms/Miss/Mrs, but I think it's appropriate
when there isn't a reasonably close relation****p. My compromise
is the old Southern tradition of Miss/Mr FirstName when Title +
LastName seems too formal.
