Hi all,
I'm new to this world in a way, as a classroom teacher leading a
group of parents and teachers to re-start our Technology education (or
information and communications as Alan November would suggest) at
school, after a series of funding cuts left us with 5 year old
clamshell ibooks missing keys, and a 20 hour paraprofessional to run
our entire program for 300 kids.
Here's what I'm hoping for from some folks here and outside the
district:
We're going to be using macs. Teachers love it, the prices are coming
down, it's easy to maintain, and the kids are used to it.
1. Can we run a 30 computer wireless lab? Our network techs say it
can't be done. To many computers accessing the WAP at the same time.
WE're talking web surfing and saving do***ents to the network, no
network applciaton serving. Our wireless network now is "b" but the
macs would be ready for "g" and I think we could upgrade an access
point or two to "g".
2. Is an upgrade to OS 10 server from Appleshare IP worth it? I'm
talking the very basic use for this server: do***ent storage, that's
about it for the near future.
3. For those of us running os 10 server, how are you liking it?
Stability? Ease of maintaince?
3. Has anyone made the transition from a lab to small group
instruction in the elementary school? Or have you decided to forgo the
lab and do mobile and classroom application alone? Using classroom
based computers. I think we could get 5-6 computers in a classroom.
(our existing ibooks batteries are dead, and it's a questionable
upgrade to buy new batteries for them. any thoughts there?)
Thanks,
Eric Bakken
