Have you tried swaddling him? Babies that age seem to like close spaces
and being bound. Think about it, he's just spent a lot of time in a
confined space - being in an open space (and a bassinet is still pretty
big for him) must be scary.
When DD was a newborn, we put the bassinet right next to our bed (on a
trunk so she was pretty level with us) and (this may sound weird) slept
with one hand on DD. She liked the touch and I felt reassured that she
was still breathing :) I, like your husband, was afraid of smothering
her.
After she outgrew the bassinet, we put her in a crib with one side off
and pushed next to the bed. At around 6 months, we put the other side
on the crib but still kept the crib in our room. Then after a few
weeks, we moved the crib to her own room.
