Honestly I don't think he is going to calm himself much past a minute or
so.
He may fall asleep because all the crying is tiring on a newborn.

I did some modified Ferber with #2 when he was a bit over 6 months.  I
would
really suggest that you try to meet his needs until he is at least 6
months
before trying this method. There is a very good chance that he will just
grow out of it on his own.

He is very young.  Here are some things to try to get him to sleep on his
own long enough to go pee or something.  He might not do that for a few
weeks though ;-).....

Swaddle
Swing
Bouncy chair
Putting him down in an infant chair or carseat.  They often like the cozy
feel of them.
Wrapping in your t-****rt
Lay down with him and then roll away to get up.
Get a sling or baby carrier so you can move around more freely and still
carry the baby.
