We had to do this with both of our sons, especially the second one. 
They just did not like the openness of the cradle or crib.  If they
weren't in the carseat, they would only sleep in the crook of my arm,
which was so uncomfortable for me.  My doctor was fine with letting
them sleep in the carseat as long as they weren't in it all day long. 
They didn't mind lying on a blanket on the floor when they were awake,
so they got plenty of time to move around during the day.  Another
thing that worked for us was to lay them on their sides with a rolled
up receiving blanket along their back.
