We've done something similar to Larry & Monika.  We put our queen 
mattress on the floor and on either side of it we have a small mattress. 
  One for each twin.  Then we put side guards up (more so they don't 
roll into the closet door or the side table leg) but those aren't really 
necessary because we are so close to the floor.
