This is what I have always done and it makes traveling so much easier.  I
never worry about bed times.  They (3 and a 4 year old) fall asleep when
they are tired.  Normally late but then they sleep late in the mornings. 
I
also never did the dark room thing.  When they fall asleep I let them
sleep
wherever they are until we can take them to bed.  We never worry about
noise
or anything either.  We can talk in regular voices without fear that they
will wake up.  I have had dinner parties where one or both have fallen
asleep by 10 or 11 but we keep on talking and listening to music until
midnight or 1.

I think the OP should start training their child to fall asleep later.  If
they are planning on working around a 7:30 bedtime, they will miss out on
dinners.
