I'm thinking of sending DS (10) to a jewish overnight camp especially for
ADHD kids. He has had trouble in camp previously because, like most ADHD
kids, his meds wear off in the early evening and then he's off on a tear
like he's on rocket fuel. He has a lot of trouble settling down
(overnights
don't work well for him), and that's a bad thing at camp. Last summer was
a
serious disaster because they had a new director, very young and
inexperienced, and he just did everything possible to make it an
unsuccessful summer for my kid. He was out of camp by day 10, although the
previous summer he was highly successful and made it through the month
with
nary a phone call. He's also way ahead in school and is used to being with
kids that are 3 years older than he is, and that does make a difference in
his behaviour.
I'm nervous about him being in a group of kids who all are jumping out of
their skins, but OTOH, I would feel better knowing that it's a very
structured program, that they understand ADHD and all of it's
ramifications,
and that they would be much more willing to work with me to make the
summer
successful.
I'm really on the fence and time is marching on and I need to make a
decision. Anyone have any insight into which would be the better choice,
regular camp or this ADHD camp? For reasons of Kashrut, etc., camps must
be
Jewish.
