Thank you all so much for the sup****t and
ideas. I have talked to the neighbor across
the street who said she had absolutely no problem
with noise. She has 4 kids (ages 7 down to baby),
so she said that all the kids are used to
sleeping through anything, besides which, she said
they really don't hear anything. The one time
Pillbug supposedly triggered the baby monitor,
she said, the baby could have been teething himself!
As to therapy... We are doing everything in our
power. Pillbug gets speech therapy, occupational
therapy, goes to a preschool with an aide, gets
15 additional hours at home with therapists... He
does not screech for hours at a time, just
occasionally throughout the day.
I am not worried at all about CPS. I think anyone
who physically comes to check out our situation
would find that we are doing everything we can and
that we're good parents who are doing our best. I
just would rather not the hassle and I also would
rather not have a neighbor who thinks CPS everything
he sees us.
Two additional pieces of information that came
out when I talked to the neighbor across the street
was that it was really safety that they were concerned
about. Plus, the nanny lets my kids play with other
people's toys while they're not outside. I've already
taken care of that, telling the nanny to first knock
or ring the bell, ask permission, play, then ring
back and say goodbye when leaving. One would not
think one needed to explain this to an adult. But,
it turns out that is one of the problems.
Another thing is that migraine neighbor uses a lot
of power tools in his garage. (That's why he hates
that Pillbug wanders to his garage area, and I've
also told the nanny never to let that happen again.)
Across-the-street has said that the power tools are
noisy (!) and they can hear them, as can I. If I
were to be petty, I could suggest to them that maybe
noise from power tools could cause migraines... But
that's if I were petty.
From talking to the other neighbors, I feel more
relieved. I will talk to migraine neighbor again to
let him know that I will make reasonable accommodation,
such as shutting all windows at the moment Pillbug is
tantrumming, and not letting him outside too early in
the morning or too late at night (not a problem since
Pillbug sleeps about 9pm). However, my kids WILL play
outside. It is beyond unreasonable to suggest that I
keep them shut inside all day long.
I agree that the bilingual thing is not his business.
Our child psychologists / speech therapists / ABA
therapists / occupational therapists / pediatrician,
etc., all have no problem with the bilingual environment
for Pillbug. I'm not even going to bring this up with
him. (Pillbug's not talking is so clearly not due to
the bilingual environment, and I love that he can
understand my parents speaking in Chinese!)
But thanks again, all. It turns out Migraine was
exaggerating about across the street, I've already
dealt with some of the issues with the nanny, and I
will just have to have one more talk with him to let
him know that I will do more, but within reason.
