Eh, they have their ups and downs, in my estimation.
I live in an area with HOAs (the town has rules, and most
developments within the town have rules, and you're beholden
to both). There are times when it's a royal PITA, but on
the other hand, there's a noticeable difference in
maintenance. It's not really avoidable unless we wanted
to move to another town (which we don't), but all in all,
it hasn't been *that* much of a burden. On the other hand,
this town has been doing this a lot longer than most (HOAs
were going strong here before most had heard of the concept),
and I know there are HOAs that are much crazier than the
ones we deal with.
